Last Friday, the GRAMMYs announced the 61st GRAMMY nominees.
As a lot of our favorites were nominated, some of ours were not as well. There has been buzz on what exactly qualifies someone to be nominated. Does popularity and timing outweigh talent?
Let's take a look at the qualifications according to the GRAMMYs for BEST NEW ARTIST for example.
"...eligible artists must have achieved a breakthrough into the public consciousness and impacted the musical landscape during the year's eligibility period."
Well, what is the eligibility period? Eligibility period for the 61st GRAMMYs was October 1, 2017-September 30, 2018 which means that during that time, the artist needed to have released at least five singles or a complete album (more that 8 songs to be considered an album), but no more than 3 albums or 30 singles. Songs must be released with general distribution through brick and mortar stores, third party online retailers and/or applicable digital streaming services (paid subscription, full catalogue, and on-demand streaming/limited downloads).
