Relationship Drama Within the Entertainment Industry
One of the first things I ask a potential talent I am considering managing is "Are you in a relationship?"
People may wonder, "Jayne, how is that your business?!"
Reason being is because different relationships influence a music career differently. This particular question is about a romantic relationship.
A lot of times, people will want to date someone in the entertainment industry because they want to be able to enjoy the fruits of their hard labor or brag or yada, yada, yada. I mean, who isn't flaunting their perfect music career on the gram? Why would you not want to be a part of that?
Talent should protect themselves from leeches and people who do not understand the inner workings of the entertainment industry. It will require long days, building and maintaining relationships with the opposite and same sex, stress, happiness and everything else under the sun. It's important to be with someone who can handle that. How can talent create when they're dating someone who is always nagging or criticizing everything they do? Believe me, from personal experience, that is too much drama and will cause a creative block. You already have enough shit to deal with.
Is it better to just be single?
Some people just stay single until they feel they can be with someone who understands them and some people pretend to be single. Your relationship status does effect your audience believe it or not. Being "single" or really single makes your audience feel like they may one day have a chance. True or not. Being single also cuts down on drama and having to answer to someone or even having to miss out on beneficial opportunities because their significant other isn't secure. I was managing an artist in Detroit who said he couldn't come to an industry event because he made a promise to his girlfriend for a date night... Guess who doesn't give AF? ME! Needless to say, he didn't last too long as a musician.
Just be weary of the intentions of your next partner and pay attention to the flags. Are they always wanting to meet a particular person? Are they always wanting to go to the studio with you? All the positive intentions are okay, but just make sure you know what you're getting into when you're getting emotionally and romantically involved.
